Coastal protection work
a) Objectives
Performance assessment of coastal infrastructure along the Indian coast to assist in the design of environmentally friendly structures for coastal protection
b) Importance of the project on economics and job creation
The components related to shore protection and infrastructure development have various socio-economic benefits. For example, the benefits of shore protection schemes include erosion control, storm protection, protection of income from fisheries (for fisherfolk) and agriculture, income from tourism and recreation, carbon sequestration, etc. These benefits can be quantified, and a benefit-to-cost ratio may be determined for each case. From a detailed benefit-to-cost ratio analysis along the Bay of Bengal, the ratio has varied from 1 in rural, remote areas to 15 in cities. This clearly indicates that for every rupee spent, there can be potential benefits of up to Rs15.
c) Methodology implemented
-
Performance evaluation(structural, hydrodynamic, geotechnical, ecological and environmental) at potential sites, including KadalurPeriyakuppam
-
Area drainage studies, including flooding at potential sites
-
Field testing of innovative materials, designs, strategies etc, for coastal protection
-
Design for enhanced and sustainable performance of coastal infrastructure
-
Sustainable utilization of dredge spoil for shoreline evolution study– ecological and physical effects
-
Assessment and evaluation of siting criteria for coastal infrastructure
