a)   Objectives

To establish the coastal monitoring system for the Indian coast, which provides tide, wave, current and met ocean parameters along the Indian coast. Carrying out operation and maintenance of coastal monitoring system.

b)   Importance of the project on economics and job creation

  • Data used for modelling and prediction

  • Also used for tsunamis, coastal processes, and sea level rise studies.

c)   Methodology implemented

The oceanographic parameter sensor is connected to a data logger with battery power by a solar power panel. The GPRS modem transfers the parameter from the site to FTP server in real-time. The data in FTP server is converted into a database and presented on the webpage in real-time.

Similarly, HF Radar for surface current and wave parameters were installed at ten sites along the Indian coast and Andaman & Nicobar Island.

d)   Outcomes / Deliverables

  • The operation, maintenance and bringing out online products for various applications of the five pairs of HF Radar installed along the Indian coast & Andaman and Nicobar Islands since 2008.

  • Establishment of a coastal observation system along the Gulf of Khambhat and the east coast of India for design wave parameter estimation and post-processing of the bathymetry survey.

  • Successfully installed vessel track module in Cuddalore HF Radar site, and sea trials have been completed for coastal surveillance.
